At Compton Verney, we were commissioned to design and build a Nomadic Play Wagon that would stand out as an eye-catching beacon in the Capability Brown landscape - a focal point for gathering, creating, and playing. The wagon is a welcoming space that invites exploration and discovery. It can be climbed in and around, with multiple routes in and out - including ramps and a slide - and its activity spills beyond its walls to create a wider playful zone. Colourful, modular blocks attach to the wagon, forming a stage that can also serve as a hub for facilitated activities. The wagon is designed to be easily towable within the Compton Verney landscape, allowing it to be set up in different areas.
The project grew out of our work as play consultants specialising in cultural and heritage sites, where playful, creative interventions can help break down perceived barriers and attract new audiences. The complex planning restrictions of these sites led us to develop small nomadic play kits that can be deployed in any location. The Nomadic Wagon builds on this idea, evolving it into a mobile hub.
