WHAT IS NOMADIC PLAY
When designing play spaces, our priority has always been to ensure that the maximum proportion of each project’s budget is invested in play value—rather than in excessive groundwork or static structures that offer little intrinsic opportunity for play.
This principle led us to challenge ourselves further: what if nothing was fixed? What if play spaces could be shaped, adapted, and reimagined by children themselves?
The answer was Nomadic Play.
We have long used Nomadic Play as a way to demonstrate that meaningful play experiences can be introduced into almost any setting, regardless of how complex or contentious the site may appear. Through this journey, we discovered that not only can it serve as a compelling case for permanent play provision, but in some instances, it can be even more popular than traditional playground installations.
Creative interventions can also help break down perceived barriers, attract new audiences, and create a welcoming environment that invites participation.
OUR AMBITION
Our ambition was to create a play offer that is more affordable, faster to implement, and constantly evolving. An approach that can be refreshed, deployed, scheduled, or neatly stored away as required. Nomadic Play offers a flexibility that traditional fixed equipment simply cannot match.
We have realised that Nomadic Play can take many different forms, introducing diverse and imaginative ways to engage that would be impossible to achieve through conventional play structures. We are particularly inspired by the open-ended nature of these challenges—experiences that are inconclusive, evolving, and driven by creativity.
This approach has also allowed us to make play a more inclusive, family-oriented experience. By setting challenges that can be enjoyed across multiple age groups, we invite participants to let go of inhibition, roll up their sleeves, and engage fully. It encourages shared experiences, collaboration, and genuine connection.
For us, Nomadic Play represents a refreshing evolution in design—a lighter, more creative expression of play. We are genuinely excited about the journey ahead.
